Myambutol (Ethambutol)
Chemical Name
2-[2-(1-hydroxybutan-2-ylamino)ethylamino]butan-1-ol
Drug Uses
An antitubercular agent that inhibits the transfer of mycolic acids into the cell wall of the tubercle bacillus. It may also inhibit the synthesis of spermidine in mycobacteria. The action is usually bactericidal, and the drug can penetrate human cell membranes to exert its lethal effect
How Taken Ethambutol
Take ethambutol exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
Take each dose with a full glass (8 ounces) of water.
Ethambutol can be taken with or without food. Taking ethambutol with food may decrease stomach upset.
Take all of the ethambutol that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may begin to improve before the infection is completely treated.
Ethambutol is usually combined with one or more other tuberculosis medicines.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Ethambutol inhibits arabinosyl transferases involved in cell wall biosynthesis.
Absorption
About 75% to 80% of an orally administered dose of ethambutol is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Missed Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not take a double dose of this medication.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
Symptoms of an ethambutol overdose are unknown.
Half Life
In patients with normal renal function, 3 to 4 hours. In patients with impaired renal function, up to 8 hours.
Storage
Store the tablets at room temperature; avoid excessive heat. Dispense in tight, light-resistant containers. Keep out of the reach of children.
